Sing, goddess, the rage of Achilles son of Peleus, that destructive rage which brought countless pains upon the Achaeans and hurled many mighty souls of heroes down to Hades, leaving their bodies as spoil for dogs and all kinds of birds; and the will of Zeus was being fulfilled—from the time when first they parted in strife, Atreus' son, lord of men, and brilliant Achilles.
